Building minds, Because No Child Should Go to School Empty-Handed
There is a moment that happens every time the JMan team arrives in a community with school bags and books. It starts quietly. One child notices, then another. Word travels the way it only can in Sierra Leone — fast, joyful and unstoppable. Children become messengers, grabbing their friends by the hand and pulling them along. And then they come. Children in uniforms. Children in everyday clothes. The blind. The hearing impaired. The physically challenged. Mothers holding toddlers. Young and old, able and not, every single one of them came.
Nobody was turned away.
That moment, that beautiful, unplanned gathering of people who simply heard that someone cared enough to show up, is exactly what JMan Cares is about.
What JMan Cares — Building Minds Actually Is
Every serious company talks about corporate social responsibility. JMan Group of Companies decided to live it differently.
Each year, JMan Group commits $50,000 to putting school supplies directly into the hands of children who need them most — the underprivileged, the overlooked, the ones growing up in communities where a school bag is not a guarantee.
To date, we have distributed more than 10,000 assorted school items to over 3,000 schoolchildren across Freetown and the provinces. And we are just getting started.
How We Do It — And Why It Matters
Our approach is simple and intentional. We do not announce. We give the first child, and the rest come. There is something powerful about letting the community itself be the messenger. It means the children who show up are the ones who truly need it. It means the moment stays organic, warm and real.
We also made a deliberate decision early on: we do not hand the supplies to teachers or school authorities. We go ourselves. CEO Amadu Kassim Jah joins the team on the ground, personally placing bags and books into children's hands. Because when you care about something, you show up for it, you don't delegate it.
Where We Have Been
So far, the JMan Cares — Building Minds programme has reached communities across Sierra Leone, including:
- Kroo Bay
- Jendema
- Calaba Town
- Grafton
- Leicester
- Wilberforce
- Magboroka
Each location carries its own memory. Its own faces. Its own story.
At our Adelaide Street and Kroo Bay distribution, something happened that none of us on the team will forget. People came from every walk of life — the blind, the hearing and speech impaired, people living with disabilities — all of them present, all of them waiting, all of them deserving. It was not a crowd. It was a community showing up for itself. And JMan was honoured to be in the middle of it.
What We Have Given
Over the years, the items distributed under JMan Cares — Building Minds have included:
- School bags
- Exercise books
- Pencils
- Pens
- And more
And in our next round of distributions, we will be expanding to include shoes and socks — because a child walking to school in dignity matters just as much as the books in their bag.
We also pay particular attention to Christian schools, which historically receive the least support and funding. Where others overlook, JMan shows up.
We could have written a cheque and called it CSR. We chose not to.
JMan Group believes that the most powerful thing a company can do is be present — physically, genuinely, repeatedly — in the communities it serves. Our CSR is not a campaign. It is not a press release. It is love. Love for God, for country, for our people and for the progress of Sierra Leone.
Every bag we hand over is a message to a child: someone sees you, someone believes in you, and someone wants you in that classroom.
Nobody can go to school without a book. And as long as JMan Group of Companies is standing, we will make sure as many children as possible never have to.
